By KEN RITTER – 19 hours ago
LAS VEGAS (AP) — One man was arrested and a second was sought Tuesday in a robbery and beating that left Oakland Raiders receiver Javon Walker unconscious on a side street after a long night of partying at Las Vegas nightclubs.
Police said Arfat Fadel, of Las Vegas, was accused of multiple felonies, including kidnapping, robbery, battery and conspiracy in a June 16 robbery. Lt. Clinton Nichols said Walker lost about $3,000 in cash and $100,000 worth of jewelry in the robbery.
The loot has not been recovered, he said.
“Mr. Walker was in town to have a good time, as many of our visitors to Las Vegas do,” Nichols said. “As he will readily admit, he probably had a little too much to drink and he did not pick up on the clues that Mr. Fadel was someone he probably should not have been with.”
Police released a booking photo of the 30-year-old Fadel and a black-and-white surveillance videotape image of the other alleged assailant who they said they believed was still in Las Vegas.
“The suspects knew who Mr. Walker was. He did not know who they were,” Nichols said. “Whether they were part of his entourage or not remains to be seen.”
Nichols said Walker got out of one vehicle he was riding in with friends and got into Fadels’s black Range Rover with Fadel and the other man before he was assaulted and robbed.
“He willingly got in the vehicle on his own,” Nichols said of the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Walker. “We’re unsure why.”
Nichols said during a news conference the two men were seen in some of the crowded nightclubs where Walker was shown on surveillance videotapes partying from about 9 p.m. June 15, until shortly before he was found unconscious at 7:19 a.m. the next morning about a block east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Reporting on the forthcoming book The Case Against Barack Obama (Regnery, 2008), authored by former Human Events writer and National Review Online staff reporter David Freddoso, a June 23 Politico article stated that Marjory Ross, the president and publisher of Regnery Publishing, “likens the goal of Freddoso’s book to that of ‘Unfit for Command’ ” (Regnery, August 2004), which was co-authored by Swift Vets and POWs for Truth co-founder John E. O’Neill and Jerome R. Corsi. Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry — which Regnery touts as among its best-selling publications — contains false and baseless attacks on Kerry’s military service, as documented by Media Matters for America, and in numerous media reports. Media Matters also extensively documented numerous falsehoods put forth elsewhere by O’Neill and other members of Swift Vets and POWs for Truth (previously known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth).
Regnery, which describes itself as “the nation’s leading conservative publisher” and “central to the conservative movement today,” has also published books by Dinesh D’Souza, David Horowitz, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, G. Gordon Liddy, Michelle Malkin, Oliver North, and Newt Gingrich.
From the June 23 Politico article:
The same publisher that distributed the 2004 best-seller that took aim at John Kerry’s Vietnam service is planning a summer release of what’s scheduled to be the first critical book on Barack Obama.
Conservative journalist David Freddoso’s “The Case Against Barack Obama” will offer “a comprehensive, factual look at Obama,” according to Regnery Publishing president and publisher Marjory Ross.
But the book’s subtitle makes clear its perspective: “The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate.”
Ross contends that the mainstream media has offered insufficient scrutiny of Obama and likens the goal of Freddoso’s book to that of “Unfit for Command,” the scathing assessment of Kerry’s war record that rocketed to No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list.

DEVIN STEWART: I’m Devin Stewart, from the Carnegie Council.
Welcome. Thank you very much for coming.
The "rise of the rest" is a huge topic in the academic world, as well as the policy world and the world in general.
What does the rise of other countries besides the United States—the rise economically, politically, and culturally—what does it mean for the international system? What does it mean for norms? What does it mean for United States foreign policy and, generally, for the international system?
This is a heated debate that’s going on right now between Fareed Zakaria, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Richard Haass, and Kishore Mahbubani, who was here recently. There are sides starting to be taken—people are kind of getting into teams—about the rise of Asia, what it means.
I personally think that we should look very carefully at this phenomenon, not as a monolithic phenomenon, but rather something to be broken down into its components, not only to understand the disparities and the differences within Asia, but also to be level-headed about what we mean by this Western concept of Asia itself.
We are very fortunate to have David Denoon from NYU here talking today about his latest book, which is going to look at some of the context to the rise of the rest. The book is The Economic and Strategic Rise of China and India. It’s particularly looking at this phenomenon since the 1997 financial crisis in Asia.
Just as a reminder, Dr. Denoon is also an author of this edited volume on China, which he might talk about in a bit.
If I can butcher your nuanced argument into a sound bite, in a sense, Professor Denoon is arguing that the 1997 financial crisis set the stage for something that the United States has not been paying attention to, particularly since 9/11.

When I started writing about electric cars about a year and a half ago, I already totally understood the superiority of EV technology over the Internal Combustion Engine. The benefits are easy to see: fewer parts and less complexity make for a great increase in reliability. The performance of EVs is also far superior. For example, the Tesla Roadster has faster acceleration than any Porsche out there, as well as most Ferraris - except for the Ferrari Enzo. The only issue with Electric Vehicles that has lingered for some time is batteries.
Batteries do not yet provide the high energy density of gasoline, so they are much heavier than gasoline and don’t allow for the same range. Batteries have also been much more expensive than gasoline. But I believe this will change as technology improves and gasoline prices continue to increase. I’m willing to bet my retirement that gasoline prices will never come down again, from a long-term perspective. Price may spike up and down, but the trend is a continual increase. I have predicted this years ago when many people thought I didn’t know what I was talking about. My prediction is based on the Peak Oil theory. This theory is quite simple: gasoline is finite and as we use it up some day there won’t be any. The only question about Peak Oil is “when will global oil production peak?”. Predicting exactly when it will happen is the hard part. In any case, just take my word that gasoline prices will increase to $5, $6, $10 a gallon and beyond. The only way to reduce the price of gasoline in the US is by significantly increasing our own oil production (which I don’t think we can do) or stealing oil from another country. Another way would be to substantially reduce our internal consumption, but that is extremely unlikely to happen. Americans are reluctant to give up their car, and I personally doubt we’ll ever find a replacement for gasoline. Biodiesel has proven to be a failure not only because its net energy return is small, but also because producing biodiesel allegedly has increased the cost of food (not something people want) by having farmers allocate land for fuel production that would otherwise be used for food production.

There is a culture clash brewing in the world. And in one church, where a do-good Christian singing group is rehearsing, a radical leftist group breaks into the place of worship with the intention of blowing it up as part of a protest–until they discover the singing teens, and a culture clash begins in Madison, in turn leading to misunderstandings and mayhem.
For What It’s Worth is Broom Street Theater’s newest play by author Cassi Harris. The show premieres Friday, June 20 and runs through the end of July. Harris, a Broom Street Theater veteran and member of the theater’s Board, received her M. F. A. in playwriting from Rutgers, the same university where long-time Broom Street Artistic Director, Joel Gersmann, studied as an undergraduate. She has had several plays produced and published, most recently last season’s Dancing in Cleo’s Cafe, which not only premiered at Broom Street, but was also published in December by Dramatic Publishing Company. It and other Harris plays are available for purchase on Amazon.com.
For What It’s Worth is brought to life by a talented ensemble cast including Broom Street veterans Ethan Mutz, Lauri Harty, Tom Collins, Greg Johnson, Amanda Hammer, Odari McWhorter, and Matt Kenyon, along with newcomers Christina Beller and Stu Bittner-Rossmiller. Ben Doran is the understudy.

It looks like John McCain could have another controversial campaign associate on his hands. This time it comes in the form of Paula Abeles, a former Clinton-backer who has now taken a lead in organizing support for McCain among women voters.
One problem, as Ben Smith has discovered: Abeles previously attained notoriety in 2003 as part of her husband’s association of Thomas Jefferson descendants, working hard to keep out any of Sally Hemmings’ African-American descendants. When it was discovered that she’d used a fake Internet identity to undermine the efforts of Jefferson’s alleged black descendants, she said it was necessary to make sure the family reunion was “a calm and civilized gathering.”
An anonymous McCain aide told Smith: “We typically don’t vet people who are simply expressing an interest in supporting the campaign, but the campaign will evaluate the policy to assure that appropriate steps are being taken.”
Former Clinton Supporter? You just can’t make this stuff up. Really.
1) How was this not discovered while Clinton was still in the race?
2) Is McCain’s campaign completely oblivious to the word “Google” and it’s relevance to running a half-decent campaign?
I think the answer to 2) had conclusively been proven to be “yes” well before this. What’s funny is that they still don’t get it. I’m envisioning his oppo team as a bunch of cranky, arthritic 65 pluses leafing through bound magazines and microfilmed newspapers in libraries.
She’s just trying to make the Presidential race a “calm and civilized” affair.
We can’t have none of them blacks mucking things up.
What’s with this “possible Afraican-American descendants” crap Ben Smith is talking about. They’ve got frakkin DNA testing to prove it, for cripes sake.
Actually the DNA evidence did not resolve the issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Hemings#DNA_testing
The DNA evidence is suggestive, but does not, for example, eliminate other male descendants of Jefferson’s grandfather. (Of course the white descendants probably don’t have a better claim.)

Alexandra De-Gale and Mario Marconi are to face the public vote on Friday after being nominated for eviction by their Big Brother housemates.
Alexandra, a 23-year-old accounts executive from Croydon, south London, was nominated by nine of her fellow contestants while Marconi, 43, received seven nominations.
The former’s nomination is unsurprising, after sparks flew between her and the other contestants on the ninth series of the reality show.
Channel 4 received hundreds of complaints regarding her behaviour during an argument over food in which she screamed at Rebecca Shiner for undercooking chips before rounding on Stephanie McMichael and Rachel Rice when they intervened.
Alexandra has been warned by Big Brother that her actions could have serious consequences but after she argued with Mohamed Mohamed when the latter’s diary room comments were broadcast to the entire house, it looks as if her stay in the Big Brother house will end on Friday.
Mario, meanwhile, has already faced eviction, after he failed a secret task along with girlfriend Lisa Appleton, Luke Marsden and Stephanie.
Jennifer Clark, a model from Chester-le-Street, said she had nominated Mario this week because of "the way he acts like my dad".
